bookmark_borderReusable Rocket Success

SpaceX is a private company that manufactures and launches advanced rockets and spacecraft. The company was founded in 2002 to revolutionize space technology, with the ultimate goal of enabling people to live on other planets.

After several recent failed missions, SpaceX has launched and recovered the first ever reusable rocket. The SpaceX rocket launched multiple satellites into space, then came back to Earth, using rockets to stabilize itself and land on a pad in at Cape Canaveral in Florida.

“If one can figure out how to effectively reuse rockets just like airplanes, the cost of access to space will be reduced by as much as a factor of a hundred. A fully reusable vehicle has never been done before. That really is the fundamental breakthrough needed to revolutionize access to space,” said founder Elon Musk.

About The Mission
With this mission, SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket will deliver 11 satellites to low-Earth orbit for ORBCOMM, a leading global provider of Machine-to-Machine communication and Internet of Things solutions. The ORBCOMM launch is targeted for an evening launch from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla. If all goes as planned, the 11 satellites will be deployed approximately 20 minutes after liftoff, completing a 17-satellite, low Earth orbit constellation for ORBCOMM. This mission also marks SpaceX’s return-to-flight as well as its first attempt to land a first stage on land. The landing of the first stage is a secondary test objective.

bookmark_borderAccidental Geoengineering: Jet Contrails Linked to Ice Haze

The BBC reports that scientists have been looking for a reason why the total amount of solar radiation reaching the earth’s surface has been increasing. A study suggests that part of the reason is that jet exhausts could be generating a layer of ice crystals that promotes a more diffuse type of light. This is why clear blue skies are getting more of a whitish tint. The scientists have been discussing their thinking at the American Geophysical Union meeting in San Francisco. Chuck Long, from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), said that if his thinking was correct then what is occurring is an example of “accidental geoengineering”.

“If you look up the definition of geoengineering, it includes large-scale manipulation of parts of the climate system or the environment, and I believe this ice haze from jet traffic does satisfy that requirement,” he told reporters.

Dr Long’s analysis suggests this “something” is high-altitude ice particles, and he links their production to the water and other emissions in aircraft contrails.

“You have to have a mechanism to generate the ice crystals and there is nothing in nature up there necessarily that we can identify that would consistently produce these ice particles, except the very well correlated and well documented increase in the commercial air traffic over the continental United States,” he told BBC News.

For quite some time, the scientific consensus has been eating meat is worse for the environment than being a vegetarian; however, a new study found a very different result. Lettuce is “over three times worse in greenhouse gas emissions than eating bacon,” according to researchers from the Carnegie Mellon University.

Paul Fischbeck, study co-author and CMU’s professor of social and decisions sciences, said: “Lots of common vegetables require more resources per calorie than you would think. Eggplant, celery and cucumbers look particularly bad when compared to pork or chicken.”

bookmark_borderClimate Change Immigrants and Refugees

By Daniel Brouse

EARTH — As human induced climate change is realized, mammals have started showing patterns of migration. Some conditions are driving animals south due to the loss of their habitat (mostly animals living on ice, such as, seals and polar bears.) Some conditions are allowing animals to migrate further north (like humpback whales.) Some conditions are forcing animals to seek higher ground, as well as, escape salt water intrusion. (eg humans that live on islands)

* NOAA recently concluded that mammals are migrating due to global warming. “Humpback and fin whales are now able to go farther north in most winters, competing with beluga whales for resources,” a scientist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said.

* The government of the Marshall Islands has requested climate change refugee status from the United States for former Bikini island residents. “The people of Bikini came back to us and asked us to take this proposal to the US, to request the resettlement trust fund be used to settle people in the US not just the Marshall Islands,” said Tony de Brum, Foreign Minister of the Marshall Islands. “We have not seen the final text of the legislation but the request that went in was on the basis of Kili being uninhabitable because of climate change.”

* In Paris almost 200 countries have ratified a new agreement in an attempt to help mitigate climate change. Included in the deal is $100bn fund to help developing and island countries adapt to global warming.

* Long ago in the United States, FEMA started a forced plan of relocation for homes located in areas prone to flooding.

Chances are large that if you are a mammal you will become a climate change refugee.

Philadelphia, PA — December 7 and 8, 2015 have been declared “don’t breath in Philly days” by the EPA. It is rare to have a December air quality alert in Philadelphia, PA. It is recommended not to breath in the out-of-doors on alert days. Children, elderly and physically active individuals are most at risk for disease and death.

The air pollution in China has become so bad the government has issued their first ever Red Alert. Schools in Beijing are closing and outdoor construction is to cease. The state-run Xinhua news agency says the red alert is the highest possible, and has not been used in the city before.

The air quality is so bad that it is unhealthy to breath. The very young, old and physically active are the most prone to ill-effects. Breathing the air could result in respiratory disease or even death.

bookmark_borderLakes Expanding Dangerously

The BBC reports that the glaciers on Mount Everest are melting so fast that they are causing large lakes. No only do the lakes make it difficult to scale the mountain, but if the ice dams break up it could cause massive flooding.

“A decade or so ago, there were individual ponds on the Khumbu glacier but in the past five years or so they have begun to get larger and join up,” said Ann Rowan, who led the field study team from the universities of Sheffield and Leeds.

“Particularly, on the left hand side of the lower reaches of the glacier, there is a series of about seven or eight large ponds that are now starting to link and form a big chain,” she told the BBC.

“There is water flowing from the upper part of the glacier through the series of these ponds and that is going to encourage them to join up.

“At present, the glacier appears to be disintegrating, and may form a few large and potentially hazardous lakes on the glacier surface.”

Glacier Breakup Animation
A NASA study published in the journal Science found a glacier in Greenland broke apart. “The consequences will be felt for decades to come.”

“North Greenland glaciers are changing rapidly,” said lead author Jeremie Mouginot, an assistant researcher in the Department of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine. “The shape and dynamics of Zachariae Isstrom have changed dramatically over the last few years. The glacier is now breaking up and calving high volumes of icebergs into the ocean, which will result in rising sea levels for decades to come.”

The scientists determined the bottom of Zachariae Isstrom is being rapidly eroded by warmer ocean water mixed with growing amounts of meltwater from the ice sheet surface. “Ocean warming has likely played a major role in triggering [the glacier’s] retreat,” Mouginot said, “but we need more oceanographic observations in this critical sector of Greenland to determine its future.”

“Zachariae Isstrom is being hit from above and below,” said the study’s senior author Eric Rignot, Chancellor’s Professor of Earth system science at UCI, and Joint Faculty Appointee at JPL. “The top of the glacier is melting away as a result of decades of steadily increasing air temperatures, while its underside is compromised by currents carrying warmer ocean water, and the glacier is now breaking away into bits and pieces and retreating into deeper ground.”

“Not long ago, we wondered about the effect on sea levels if Earth’s major glaciers in the polar regions were to start retreating,” Rignot noted. “We no longer need to wonder; for a couple of decades now, we’ve been able to directly observe the results of climate warming on polar glaciers. The changes are staggering and are now affecting the four corners of Greenland.”
