Bats Make 3-D Maps

Researchers have found that bats have neurons called “place cells” that help them navigate three-dimensional spaces. Rats have similar cells but only create 2-D maps for flat surfaces.

Similar to a point on a map representing a location, each place cell represented a specific area of the environment. The place cells create a 3-D map for the bats to navigate.
